Style Journal | Old School Vibes

For a long time, I’ve wanted to own a matching set of sorts, so in a spur of the moment, I decided to make my own! On a trip to Spotlight with my mum, I was browsing through different kinds of fabrics and was drawn this print for for its retro vibe and the colour. My wardrobe is very lacking in the warm-colours-department, so when I saw the material I thought, hey, why not?

With quite a lot of help from my mum, I created a pattern for the skirt, a pattern for the crop top using my existing cropped shirts as a template. This was my first time sewing my own clothes so I'm very happy with how it turned out!

For anyone who wants to start making their own clothes, if the material is not stretchy (which this wasn't) it's really important to get the measurements right, so don't rush making the pattern. It's the first and probably most important step!
The cropped shirt has a classic silhouette fitting down to the waist just before the A-line skirt begins, emphasising the feminine figure. The material is quite stiff and structured (I think it's called cotton twill), so that the skirt maintains its shape, and makes the overall outfit appear more sophisticated.

Material of Crop Top and Skirt: Spotlight | Shoes: Converse

There’s something so simple yet timeless about matching sets. The outfit is basically decided for you, but it still looks carefully considered. Better yet, you can even wear them as separates and pair them with different tops or bottom - Multi-functional pieces are the best!

What do you like about matching sets? Leave a comment and let me know your thoughts :)

Bye, have fun!

  1. I saw this on lookbook and loved it so felt the need to come and visit your blog. This is stunning, I love the print and I also love matching separates. I am so impressed it is self made. I wish I could make my own clothes I have done a few things but with a great deal of help, so I mainly customise clothes which is much easier. Great to also find another blogger from Australia.

  2. Thank you so much for your comment it truly means a lot! I was quite nervous to post this haha
It really was a lot of work but I owe it all to my mum because she was there for most of the difficult parts like achieving the shape of the top, sewing on the zips, etc. It was my first project and I'm hoping that eventually I'll be able to make something without help!
